Psychoanalytic Explorations in Femininity: COWAP's global work on violence, misogyny and female development



Panellists, Marion Schoenfeld, Ema Ponce de León, Jhuma Basak and Andrea Kahn, together with Paula Ellman, will discuss the successful conferences that the Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis has held around the world this year. In Kolkata, India, “Safety of Women in Dogmatic Times”, in Montevideo, Uruguay, the COWAP Latin American Dialogues “Violence: Childhood-Gender-Society”, in Tbilisi, Georgia, “Medea: Femininity, Motherhood, Love and Hate”, and in Los Angeles, California, “Psychic Survival in the Face of Misogyny”. 

During this webinar, the panellists will present and discuss the issues and challenges that came to light in the conference contexts, that are most relevant to women in their regions. They will bring a psychoanalytic lens to understanding the similarities and differences of the conflicts they face in this area of the feminine. 

Paula Ellman
Paula L. Ellman, PhD, ABPP, is a training and supervising analyst in the Contemporary Freudian Society, Washington DC (CFS) and the IPA. She is overall Chair of the IPA Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis and a Board members of the North America Psychoanalytical Confederation (NAPsaC). She is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the George Washington University School of Professional Psychology and a Visiting Professor at the Sino-American Continuing Training Project for Wuhan Hospital Psychotherapy, Wuhan, China. She has written and presented in the areas of female psychology, enactment, terror, sadomasochism and unconscious fantasy. Recent publications include: Finding Unconscious Fantasy in Narrative, Trauma and Body Pain: A Clinical Guide (with N. Goodman, Routledge, 2017) and The Courage to Fight Violence Against Women: Psychoanalytic and Multidisciplinary Perspectives (with N. Goodman, Karnac, 2017). She has a private practice in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in North Bethesda, Maryland.  

Ema Ponce de León
Ema Ponce de León is a full member and training analyst of the Uruguayan Analytical Association and member of the IPA. She is a psychologist, works with children, adolescents and adults and she holds a PhD from the Complutense University of Madrid. She represents Uruguay as liaison member for COWAP and was the former Headquarters Director of the Board of FEPAL (2016-2018). She lives in Montevideo and is the Founder and Director of “Clínica del Niño – Harwood Care”, an interdisciplinary clinic for the assistance of children and adolescents since 1991. She has published many articles in Uruguayan and foreign books and magazines. Her research subjects are psychic constitution, difficulties on symbolisation and psychopathology of early childhood, interdisciplinary interventions, parenthood and adolescent maternity. 


Jhuma Basak
Jhuma Basak is a Training Analyst of the Indian Psychoanalytical Society, and PhD in Psychology from the Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. She is also the Joint Secretary of the Indian Psychoanalytical Society, and a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association. She has international publications in journals and books translated into multiple languages, along with papers presented at various IPA congresses. 
Dr Basak is the Mentor of the Psychoanalytic Study Group, Department of Psychology, Christ University, Bangalore. She is a Visiting Professor at the Ambedkar University, School of Human Studies, New Delhi. She is also a Visiting Faculty in the Department of Psychology, West Bengal State University, Kolkata. 
Currently, she is the editor of Samiksa, the journal of the Indian Psychoanalytical Society, and also a member of the International Advisory Board of the academic journal, Institutionalised Children: Explorations and Beyond (ICEB).
Dr Basak is a Consultant at the Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital, Medica Superspeciality Hospital, Crystal Minds, Kolkata. She is also in private practice. 

Andrea Kahn
Andrea S. Kahn, PhD, FIPA, is a member of the Psychoanalytic Centre of California (PCC). In 2017, she was appointed to her position at COWAP and recently serves as chair of COWAP LA 2018 conference, titled “Psychic Survival in the Face of Misogyny: The Dialectic Between the Internal and External Glass Ceiling. 
In 2016, she was asked to chair the IPA Nominating Committee for North America, and since 2012, she has served as PCC representative of the Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS) and currently holds the office of Vice-President; she represents PCC as alternate to the North American Psychoanalytic Confederation (NAPSaC); and is a member of the North American Tavistock Observation Leaders (NATOL). In addition, at PCC, Dr Kahn served as chair of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Programme (PPP) for 8 years and is an associate faculty member. She has been in private practice for over 40 years in Los Angeles, California. 

Marion Schoenfeld
Marion Schoenfeld is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Association and a British representative to COWAP.
She has a particular interest in gender and sexuality; also, in early trauma and dissociative states.
She works in private practice in London, UK.
