The Romanian Society of Psychoanalysis was formed immediately after the political and social changes of 1989 and in February 1990.The foundation of the SPR was a pivotal moment in the development of psychoanalysis in Romania.
Between 2000-2011, the Society had the status of Study Group and was supervised by a sponsoring committee composed of Dr. Giampaolo Kluzer (Chairman of the Committee), Dr. Luis Rodriguez de la Sierra y Escobar (Member of the Committee) and Dr. Michel Vincent (Member of the Committee).
In August 2011, at the IPA Congress in Mexico, the Romanian Society of Psychoanalysis was promoted to Provisional Society status. The Romanian Society of Psychoanalysis (Provisional Society) works under the supervision of a Liaison Committee composed of Dr. Jean-Michel Quinodoz (Chair of the Committee) and Dr. Milagros Cid Sanz (Member of the Committee).
The Romanian Society of Psychoanalysis has been a Component Society of the IPA since 2017
