Sigmund Freud Institute moves back to its original site

The Sigmund Freud Institute has moved back to the old Alexander Mitscherlich building (Myliusstr. 20) which has been renovated beautifully in combination with a new wing of the building. This is a great gesture of acceptance for psychoanalysis by the State of Hessen. In 2002 the same State wanted to close this historically famous institute.  The SFI is flourishing now: with 56 psychoanalysts and scientists working there with many young people (in full analytic training). It is part of the research initiative of the State of Hessen and has - thanks to its large research projects - more than a 100% funding rate.

On September 18,  there will be a celebration for re-opening the building. It is also a great pleasure that the IPA Frankfurt Psychoanalytical Institute, the Anna Freud Institute (training institute for children and adolescents), the Institute for Psychoanalytical Education and the Jewish Counseling Center will move into the same building. The Minister of the State of Hessen, the Mayor of the City of Frankfurt, the president of the Goethe University, the presidents of the DPV and the IPU and other representatives will give welcoming speeches.

Letter of support from the IPA President

On behalf of the Board and Members of the International Psychoanalytical Association, I am happy and proud to celebrate the reopening of the Freud Institute at its historical site in the old Alexander Mitscherlich building at Myliusstr. 20.

The great significance of this event, due to the support and entitlement by the State institutions, is very clear to the IPA. It shows a fundamental change in the position of psychoanalysis in the public organizations and in their contemporary culture and mentality. This is happening thanks to the invaluable work of all those psychoanalysts, researchers and teachers who are carrying forward the study and practice of psychoanalysis. In this area, Germany is the most advanced place where our scientific tradition and activities are recognized and valorized.

This is an important day for the whole psychoanalytical community all over the world and the IPA will be pleased to celebrate this event also on our website, given its absolute importance.

I wish you and the 56 psychoanalysts and scientists working at the SFI a great future, extending the sincere thanks of all our membership.

With huge gratitude and admiration,

Stefano Bolognini
IPA President
