Psychoanalysis and Sexual & Gender Diversity Studies Committee

Our psychoanalytic association aims to realise as much as possible, the scientific project, on the one hand, to elucidate human nature and culture through psychoanalytic thinking, and on the other, to include and perpetuate psychoanalysis in human culture.
At the dawn of psychoanalysis, the nature-culture link proposed by Freud was the infantile sexuality that lies in abandoning the sexological conception and advocates for a psychic approach to the sexual; the libido sexualis, susceptible to many transformations and developments according to each personality and each environment.
Whilst psychoanalysis refused to make moral judgments – aiming instead to liberate from guilt – it gave rise to social disagreement in the cultural community. When first presented, the infantile sexuality, was a scandal for social norms and mores. In our days, sociocultural evolution has integrated many psychoanalytic developments regarding psychosexuality, and the liberation from guilt allowed the outcome of new sexualities and gender diversities. Today, psychoanalysis is invited by the cultural community to participate in taking into consideration and elucidating the evolution of the complexity that surrounds human sexuality.
To this end, the IPA’s Committee on Sexual and Gender Diversity Studies seeks to understand what we know, and what we believe, about the origins, development and expression of sexuality, gender and sexual object choice. What is the impact of sexual and gender migrations on contemporary psychoanalysis?
Panellists, Leticia Glocer Fiorini, Dana Amir and Marco Posadas will provide updates about the work of the Sexual and Gender Diversity Studies Committee and some conceptual starting points that can help with the complexity of human sexuality, gender experience and psychoanalytic thinking.
Leticia Glocer Fiorini, MD
Training and Supervising Analyst of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association (APA). Co-Chair for Latin America of the International Psychoanalytical Association’s (IPA) Committee on Sexual and Gender Diversity Studies. Professor at the University of Buenos Aires (Master Studies: “Interdisciplinary Studies of Subjectivity”). Past President of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association, past Chair of the Publications Committee of the IPA and of the Argentine Psychoanalytical Association. Leticia was awarded with the Celes Cárcamo prize in 1994 for her work: “The Feminine Position: a Heterogenous Construction”.
Author of: “The Feminine and the Complex Thought” (Lugar Ed, 2001), “Deconstructing the Feminine: Psychoanalysis, Gender and Theories of Complexity” (Karnac, 2007) and “Sexual Difference in Debate: Bodies, Desires and Fictions” (Karnac, 2017), among other publications on the feminine, motherhood and sexual and gender diversities.
Dana Amir, PhD
Dr Dana Amir is a Clinical Psychologist, Supervising and Training Analyst at the Israel Psychoanalytic Society, a faculty member at Haifa University (Head of the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Psychoanalysis), poetess and literature researcher. She is the author of six poetry books and three psychoanalytic non-fiction books: “Cleft Tongue” (Karnac, 2014), “On the Lyricism of the Mind” (Routledge, 2016), and “Bearing Witness to the Witness” (Routledge, in print). Her papers have been published in psychoanalytic journals and presented at national and international conferences. She is the winner of many national and international prizes, including, The Francis Tustin International Memorial Prize (2011), the IPA Sacerdoti Prize (2013), IPA Hayman Prize (2017) and the IFPE Distinguished Psychoanalytic Educators Award (2017).
Marco Posadas, MSW, RSW
Is a Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Psychologist (MEX), Chief Clinical Officer at The House of Purpose, a consulting firm where he develops psychoanalytically informed programmes for organisations. He is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association and PhD Candidate at Smith College School for Social Work. He is the current Chair of the Gender and Sexual Diversity Studies Committee of the IPA. He is faculty at the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis. He is adjunct faculty at Smith College School of Social Work in Northampton, Massachusetts. He co-Chaired the scientific programme at the IPA International Congress in Boston 2015. He served on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) where he was recipient of the 2013 OASW Inspirational Leader Award for his work with underserved and marginalised populations.
