The Latin American Institute of Psychoanalysis (ILaP) was created in 2006 as a collaboration between the IPA and FEPAL (Federation of Latin American Psychoanalytic Associations). The role of ILaP is to teach, train and promote psychoanalysis in the Latin American region in areas where IPA training institutes do not already exist.

ILaP is currently working in the following countries: Bolivia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras (Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula) and Nicaragua.

As an IPA training institute ILaP’s Psychoanalytic training is based on a tripartite model with three interrelated processes: a personal analysis with a training analyst, theoretical course work, and supervised psychoanalytic work. Training is based on the Uruguayan training model.

To enable ILaP to work in areas where there are no Training Analysts or Institutes, it works within the IPA’s guidelines for partial remote training analysis.
