Messages to Members from the President
3 July 2026: Earthquake in Venezuela
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to you following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. On behalf of the International Psychoanalytical Association, I wish to express our deepest sympathy to all those who have been affected by this tragedy, especially our colleagues, candidates, patients, and their families.
In the days since the earthquake, we have been in contact with our colleagues in the region. It is a relief to know that, based on the information available so far, our members in Venezuela are safe. At the same time, we know that the consequences of such a disaster reach far beyond physical injury, and that many people are now facing loss, uncertainty, and immense practical challenges.
The IPA's Psychoanalytic Assistance in Crises and Emergencies Committee (PACE) is working closely with our two Venezuelan societies to understand their immediate needs and coordinate the IPA's response. Several psychoanalytic societies across Latin America have also begun organizing support for Venezuelan communities in their own countries, and PACE is exploring further collaboration with regional partners and humanitarian organizations where this may be helpful.
As our next newsletter will not go into production until the middle of the month, and knowing that many colleagues are concerned, I am writing to you now with this initial update. As our work with PACE and our colleagues in Venezuela progresses, and we gain a clearer understanding of how members may be able to assist, we will provide a further update in the July newsletter. In the meantime, we will continue to share updates on the IPA website and through our social media channels as new information becomes available.
I am sure that members throughout the IPA will be keeping our colleagues in Venezuela, their families, their patients, and all those affected throughout the region in their thoughts. The strength of our Association lies not only in our scientific work but also in the solidarity we show one another in times of need.
In solidarity,
Heribert Blass
