Maxine Anderson

22 March, 2026

We received word this morning that Maxine Anderson has died. She left her life as she lived it, in a calm and peaceful manner last evening March 21, about 10 pm, of complications of ALS.

Maxine had a remarkable ability to bring people close, and care for them. All of us at NPSI were drawn here by Maxine and Marianne working together to make an Institute and Society for analysts in Seattle and this reach extended around the US and Canada, as well as to other communities in other parts of the world.

One NPSI Board member reflected:  “This morning I was reading about native garden planting, and thinking of Maxine’s intention, the careful unobtrusive way of bringing people together and seeding community. What a bright flower and what a skillful gardener she has been! From the ground cover to the tree canopy I see and feel and am comforted by her life’s work, which will endure into the future.”

Maxine died on the first day of spring.

Information about ways to celebrate and remember her will be forthcoming. In the meanwhile we offer our heartfelt condolences to Maxine’s husband Al Francisco, to members of the Anderson family especially sister Julie Anderson and niece Phoebe, and to friends, colleagues, caregivers and all those many people whose life she touched.

In sadness,

NPSI Board of Directors,

Ken Cunningham, Don Ross, Dana Blue, Rikki Richard, Margaret Bergmann-Ness,  Mara Applebaum and Carolyn Steinberg
