JUNE 2023 COMMITTEE OF THE MONTH

IPA IN CULTURE COMMITTEE

Culture has always been an integral part of psychoanalysis - think of Freud's use of Greek mythology to elaborate essential clinical concepts like the Oedipus Complex - and psychoanalysis has long been an integral part of the culture. In 2017 the IPA, under the presidency of Virginia Ungar and Sergio Nick, recognised this connection by defining the interchange with culture as part of the IPA in the Community outreach activities. Since 2021 under the presidency of Harriet Wolfe and Adriana Prengler, the IPA in Culture Committee has worked under the umbrella of the Steering Committee of The IPA in the Community and the World, chaired by Mira Erlich-Ginor.

The primary function of the culture committee is to initiate, enhance and contribute to an inspiring dialogue between these two domains by engaging with all aspects of culture. The goal is to learn about, experience, and stimulate creativity by drawing from the works of internationally renowned artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and performers.

In 2020, every month, we sent out a short film to be seen here:

In 2021 we started our series of monthly "Little Gifts" to be seen here:

We continued in 2022 with little musical gifts, to be seen here:

For 2023 we have planned another mix of cultural gifts to be seen here:

These little gifts aim to surprise, amuse or inspire and send a cultural spark into your day.

In 2019 we launched a short story competition, and – out of 250 submissions from 40 countries – we selected 30 stories. These stories have been published and available since 2021 in a multi-lingual book, THE ANALYST AS STORYTELLER, EL ANALISTA COMO NARRADOR:

We have invited everybody to create short book recommendations, essays, movies, art, and music reviews, to be posted on our website:
https://www.ipa.world/IPA/en/Resources/Culture.aspx

We also responded to various themes of the IPA Congresses with panels:

For the 2019 IPA Congress on "The Feminine" we presented a panel on "Creative Women - Feminine Creativity" to be found in the art section of our webpage: https://www.ipa.world/IPA/en/IPA_World/art_reviews.aspx

For the 2021 Congress on "The Infantile: Its multiple dimensions" we invited children's drawings and created a beautiful carpet of artworks by children up to the age of 18 years. And we presented a panel on "Dreams for Two: Charlie Chaplin's Movie "The Kid" to be found under Reviews in our Film section: https://www.ipa.world/IPA/en/Film_Reviews.aspx

For the 2023 Congress on "Mind in the Line of Fire" we have prepared a panel titled "Resistance in the Line of Fire" to be presented in Cartagena.
