• Gertie Bögels
  The Letters of Sigmund Freud to Jeanne Lampl-de Groot, 1921-1939: Psychoanalysis and Politics in the Interwar Years (The International Psychoanalysis Library 2022)
  Bögels' beautifully and expertly edited and annotated book “My dear Jeanne” presents for the first time Sigmund Freud’s correspondence with the renowned Dutch psychoanalyst Jeanne Lampl-de Groot between 1921 and 1939. This major contribution to the psychoanalytic literature shows a personable, supportive and deeply engaged Freud, who as Jeanne’s psychoanalyst, friend and mentor also provides astute commentary on psychoanalytic developments and societal issues, including the rising Austrian/ German anti-Semitism. Additionally, Bögels introduces Jeanne Lampl-de Groot through her intelligent, passionate letters to her parents, and we learn how her innovative conceptions on female psychosexual development influenced Freud.

  I was given a gift of a book, a memoir, and reading it, I found it deeply interesting, and extremely pertinent to feminist awareness.  The book, Snatched From Oblivion: A Cambridge Memoir, by Marian Cannon Schlesinger, Little, Brown and Company, Boston and Toronto, 1984 and 1997, is a treasure trove that evokes an era so engrossingly I felt transported in time. I was so moved by what I had read that I shared my enthusiasm about the book with a group of writers who had contributed to a book to which I too had contributed, Rage and Creativity: How Feminism Sparked Psychoanalysis, edited by Lucille Spira, 2020, IP Books.   This is a volume of poetry by Dr. Emily Bilman in which she reflects on the psychological challenges posed the current epidemic. The volume is appropriately titled Apperception that deals with the nuanced probings of the anxieties engendered by the seemingly unfettered virus. Dr. Bilman is the author of the acclaimed The Psychodynamics of Poetry: Poetic Virtuality and Oedipal Sublimation in the Poetry of T.S. Eliot and Paul Valery. (Lambert Academic Publishing, 2010).

  A Month in Siena Random House Inc., 2019
  Art can hold loss in a special way. That is the undercurrent theme of this slim but emotionally charged book by a writer whose father’s disappearance was depicted in a poignant memoir titled “The Return”.  His search continues in this second book but in a subtler way, a search unconscious of itself but nevertheless driven to both confront and placate his grief through the masterpieces created by the master Sienese painters. A remarkable journey awaits the reader.

  The Psychodynamics of Poetry: Oedipal Sublimation and Poetic Virtuality in the Poetry of T. S. Eliot and Paul Valéry

   Emily Bilman's book is a sensitive study of the sublimation of trauma experienced by poets as herself and the poetry of  T.S. Eliot and Paul Valéry. She particularly emphasizes the transformation of trauma into metaphors based on psychobiography. The book reveals Emily's creative process called "virtuality" which she defines as the poets' depersonalisation allowing them to write about trauma  through the objectification of experience. The book contains her creative thesis which became the book published by Melinda Cochrane International as A Woman By A Welldealing with the poet's sensitive initiation into womanhood, her relations with her masculine others, and her poetic growth with meta-statements concerning her creative process which are all topics with actual interests for psychoanalysts.

  Marie NDiaye, de padre senegalés, nació en Loiret, Francia, en 1967. Esta escritora francesa es poco conocida entre los lectores latinoamericanos. En Francia ha sido galardonada con el Premio Femina en 2001 por su novela Rosie Carpe y con el Premio Goncourt en 2009 por su novela-tríptica Tres mujeres fuertes. En esta obra, intensamente femenina, la autora muestra con palabras enternecedoras el sufrimiento de los tres personajes femeninos: Norah, Fanta y Khady Demba. Estas mujeres, que crecieron en un entorno donde predominaba la violencia, la discriminación racial y sexual, luchan con firmeza para resguardar su dignidad ante las humillaciones con las cuales se enfrentan a diario. La supervivencia es el desafío de los personajes principales.
  La escritora narra historias de amor y de familias enfrentadas entre sí. No existe la futilidad en su escrito sino, fundamentalmente, la reflexión acerca de la injusticia que sufren sus personajes.
  Su estilo narrativo gira en torno a las migraciones, el racismo, la separación familiar, el maltrato infantil, la angustia, la depresión, la desemejanza económica, el comercio sexual, el fanatismo religioso.

  El libro gira en torno a la historia de Mattia, un chico inmerso dentro de un drama familiar acerca de su hermana y la herida narcisista que abre en los padres la condición limitada de esa nena en su neurodesarrollo. Mattia va siendo testigo y partícipe de viviencias que se insertan como improntas en su psique, inhibiendo partes de su yo que le impiden salir de sí mismo, del universo matemático al que se dedica a estudiar. El universo al que puede acceder mediante la lógica, pero sin la contraparte afectiva necesaria para generar representaciones que lo liguen a un otro. Me encantó la sensibilidad del autor para dar cuenta de las dificultades de los seres humanos en la relación con el otro, incluyendo las vías de relación a través del dolor como en Alice y su cuerpo que se sensibiliza sin que pueda decir a través de la palabra. Una bella y dolorosa historia tan real como las narradas en el espacio de nuestro trabajo.

  Se trata de una novela muy bien estructurada que despierta y mantiene alto el interés hasta el final.
  Resulta muy original la instrumentación dramática de los personajes internos, Memoria, Reflexión y Emoción.
  El eje principal por el que cursa el argumento es la elaboración de un duelo y el desenmascaramiento de una negación sostenida con esfuerzo en un contexto de familias escindidas.
  Describe maravillosamente las características de la psicopatía y toda una trama vincular de la que resulta tan doloroso como necesario salir.

  Une jeune femme part à la recherche de sa tante maternelle et semble tourner en rond dans le dédale de petits villages de son enfance, elle paraît empêtrée dans une quête identitaire impossible. Le lecteur se sent aussi perdu qu’elle, ne sachant jamais s’il s’agit d’un rêve ou d’un délire, le temps est suspendu ou circulaire, les endroits sont confondus, et rien ne paraît être assuré. L’errance de la narratrice est comme le travail du rêve ; tout est vrai, la négation n’existe pas. Par l’atmosphère particulièrement onirique de ce récit, Marie N’Diaye réussit complètement à nous immerger dans les coins et recoins de la psyché humaine. Marie N’Diaye a écrit de nombreux autres romans, dont « Rosie Carpe » qui a obtenu le Prix Fémina en 2001 et « Trois femmes puissantes » le Prix Goncourt en 2009, mais aussi des pièces de théâtres, des nouvelles et même des livres pour enfants. Elle est traduite en plusieurs langues.

  São sete contos, escritos em uma linguagem simples, que surpreendem, ora pela temática, ora pelos rumos inesperados que a narrativa toma. O autor cria uma atmosfera onírica, composta muitas vezes, por elementos de surrealismo, várias referências aos Beatles, ao jazz e também a outros autores, como Kafka . 
  O narrador faz algumas análises interessantes do comportamento e das motivações dos personagens, e traz reflexões sobre temas como solidão, traição, ciúmes, paixão.

• Santiago H. Amigorena 
  Le ghetto intérieur

  Voilà 25 ans que Santiago H. Amigorena, écrit l’impact du silence laissé en héritage par son grand-père maternel, dans sa construction psychique. Un silence qui est l’onde de choc  de l’extermination des juifs d’Europe par le totalitarisme nazi, qui se propage jusqu’à lui, jusqu’à nous. 
  Ce roman ci, est un point d’origine; une fiction de la vie de son grand-père, Vicente Rosenberg,  entre 1940 et 1945 à Buenos Aires. En 1928, c’est un jeune homme qui quitte la Pologne et sa famille pour l’Argentine. Grandir loin de sa mère, faire fortune, fuir l’antisémitisme, les raisons s’additionnent et s’entremêlent. Aucune d’elles ne sont déterminantes. 
  En 1940, les lettres de sa mère sont plus rares et cessent.  Les phrases courtes, le vocabulaire simple et sobre, relatent les faits historiques qui surgissent à la lecture des journaux et divers témoignages. L’édification du mur du ghetto s’incarne dans le silence qui s’impose à lui. Exclure le monde extérieur, fuir la vie, ses joies et ses vicissitudes, fuir les informations du monde : c’est faire taire et oublier les mots qui désignent ce qui se passe, dans le monde et en lui-même. Quel est le devenir d’un blanc de la pensée ainsi instauré? Que faire de cet héritage? 
  L’écriture fait parler ce silence à une distance de douze milles kilomètres et quatre vingt années des faits. Cette mise en forme est une élaboration possible de cet héritage et sa transmission.. Elle est l’effet d’un traumatisme devenu évènement pour ne plus peser sur la vie. Le silence de ce grand-père devient parcelle d’identité. 
  C’est ainsi qu’il s’adresse à nous tous.

• Clarice Lispector

  Only late I discovered the world-renowned Brasilian writer Clarice Lispector on the occasion of this great collection of her stories, translated by Katrina Dodson and introduced and edited by Benjamin  Moser (who also wrote a remarkable biography of Lispector). Rarely have I been as fascinated with a writer than I felt when reading Lispector’s amazing stories. Written with a keen psychological sense, she plumbs the complexity of life, registered on a deep emotional level and transferred to the thought processes of the stories’ protagonists as well as to the reader. Lispector’s novels can be an intellectually challenging read. These stories, however, are captivating and entertaining, thus offering a wonderful introduction into her work.

  The Vet’s Daughter

  This small novel, originally published in English in 1959 and recently rediscovered, republished and translated into Spanish and German, is a jewel of “literature brute”. In a seemingly naïve and detached voice the teenage first-person narrator tells us about her traumatizing childhood and her growing up increasingly resorting to dissociation (this novel could be a teaching tool). It’s a gripping tale in a unique voice, a shocking account of trying and in the end failing to cope with ordinary ongoing familial neglect, brutality, and exploitation.

  Written in a masterful and mesmeric prose, this book tells the story of a man driven back to the Irish country house of his birth where he is met by old ghosts and waking dream thoughts which punctuate his solitary life.
  Throughout the course of the novel we can see his mind unravelling and creating anew following the destiny of the geological phenomenon known as “river capture”. A paean to Joyce, a depiction of a crossroad where past and present meet, an insightful read for psychoanalysts which portrays the strength and pitfalls of the human mind.

Erlebnisse, Erinnerungen, Fantasien, Vorstellungen und Träume assoziieren sich zu einem psychoanalytischen Roman, der (zum Teil mit dem Mittel der Verschiebung auf andere Geschichten) die Spuren einer Liebe zwischen Trennung, Verlust und Wiederfindung in der exotischen Wildnis des „inneren Afrikas” nachzeichnet. Ein faszinierendes Buch, spannend und unterhaltsam erzählt.

  Dieses Buch liefert verlässliche Informationen über Goethes Leben und Werk. Die jetzt neu heraus gekommenen 3. völlig überarbeitete Auflage enthält ein eigenes Kapitel über Kreativität. Goethe wird als eine Persönlichkeit verstanden, die in der Lage war, individuelle Krisen durch künstlerische Schöpfungen zu überwinden. Ein sehr lesenswertes Buch, voller Überraschungen, nicht nur für Goethe-Freunde, sondern auch für diejenigen, die sich psychoanalytisch für Kreativität interessieren.

  The Photographer at Sixteen A Memoir

  This is a remarkable book written by the Hungarian born and British naturalized poet George Szirtes. Through this narrative journey he “invents” his mother, constructing her history in après coup making use of photographs. His mother was a photographer. Szirtes ‘ visual and poetic imagination carries the reader through the discovery of the personal predicament of a woman in a dark page of European history. The narrative permits the writer to work through his ambivalent relationship with his mother. This is a well written book, emotionally poignant and thought provoking for the psychoanalyst.

  L’oiseau, le goudron et l’extase

  Alexander Maksik, auteur américain, a écrit « Shelter in place », traduit en français par « L’oiseau, le goudron et l’extase ». En filigrane d’une histoire d’amour entre Tess et le narrateur, le lecteur découvre petit à petit et tout en douceur les difficultés à vivre du narrateur. Le protagoniste nous plonge dans son univers personnel avec toute sa sensibilité et sa poésie. Ce n’est que la lecture déjà bien avancée que tout d’un coup on pense que toute cette complexité pourrait aussi être réduite à des troubles bipolaires et à la pathologie.

• Irina Adomnicai
  Amours de contrebande
  Editions L’Harmattan, 2015
  Roman tissé de trois récits, que le fil du Danube relie dans un étonnant univers gothique, saturé de cruauté et poésie. L’intérêt de cet écrit polyphonique pour la psychanalyse réside dans l’harmonisation constante entre un point de départ ancré dans la réalité, et son déploiement sublimé à travers une intrigue œuvre de fiction métaphorique. Le travail du Moi inconscient convoqué ainsi par l’auteure culmine dans « L’île de l’âme », histoire du meurtre écologique de ce lieu magique ayant un jour existé, nommé « Ada-Kaleh ». Lieu séculaire dont la constitution géologique et la nature historique correspondent de façon étonnante à la construction, proposée par Freud, de l’appareil psychique.

  Il s’agit d’un roman qui raconte l’histoire de trois bébés, « les trois mousquetaires », deux garçons et une fille nés la même année dans un village néerlandais. Son intérêt pour la psychanalyse est double. D’une part, parce que l’écriture hyperréaliste facilite une approche originale du rapport réalité externe/réalité interne, dans le développent et l’évolution des trois protagonistes. De l’autre, parce que son intrigue souligne le rôle clé de l’analité à l’adolescence, pour l’appréhension et l’intégration de la différence des sexes, dans l’assomption d’une identité psychologique en accord avec l’identité biologique.
