COWAP Asia Pacific Working Group
Confirmed
COWAP Asia Pacific Working Group on Transcultural Perspectives
The Asia Pacific group of COWAP is pleased to announce an inaugural series of monthly webinars,
“COWAP AP Working Group on Transcultural Perspectives,”
running from June to December 2026. This initiative aims to bridge psychoanalytic thinking across the diverse landscapes of our region, featuring scholarship from Australia, China, India, Iran, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The series explores how different cultures engage with, transform, and create new psychoanalytic theories within their unique historical, geographical, and political contexts. Beyond academic exchange, these webinars offer a collective space to “dream” (Bion, 1967) together—fostering a transcultural group process that enriches our clinical and theoretical understanding.
Themes & Inquiries
Throughout the series, esteemed presenters will address a wide range of issues related to femininity and the human condition, including:
•
Transience, Disillusionment, and Continuity: Navigating psychic change across cultures.
•
The Internal Structure of Femininity: Exploring the matrix and shape of female subjectivity.
•
Desire and Oppression: Examining women's desires and the refiguration of subjectivity within specific political contexts.
•
Maternal Function and Parenting: Understanding motherhood in complex contexts, such as widowed parenting.
•
Existential Terror: Confronting the fear and existential terror of worthlessness.
These presentations will alert us to the nuances of cultural dilemmas, myths as psychic memories, and the visible and unconsciously invisible "glass ceilings" created by prejudice and discrimination. We invite you to join us in this vital exploration of how these themes play out both within the clinic and in the world at large.
