This year’s theme is: “Women Analysing Women Today”.

Galit Atlas (2016) reminds us that it is never possible to “definitely know what belongs to us and belongs to our patients; our minds are interwoven, project and interject, and our narratives are co-created”. In this webinar, we seek to explore the psychoanalytic encounter that happens between two women – an encounter that carries it’s own complexities and meanings. Many authors like Rosine Perelberg (2018), Jaqueline Godfrind (2018), and Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel (1986) have reflected on the unique dynamics that emerge when both analyst and patient are women. Such a configuration can evoke distinct movements, states, and resistances. At the same time, patriarchal structures and mandates – deeply embedded across societies - shape women’s subjectivities and influence the work that takes place within the analytic setting. What, then, does a “free floating” conversation between two women look like? Today, we recognise that there is no singular way to be a woman. In the clinical encounter, as analysts, we are often invited to meet multiple expressions of womanhood - some that challenge our own desires and fantasies, and others that reveal our implicit biases. These moments can question existing theories and techniques, opening up pathways toward new forms of thinking, being and working together.
