The conference will focus on the contemporary challenges, psychoanalysis faces when working with parents, infants, children and adolescents in a rapidly changing world due to social upheavals and technological development. These changes have affected all aspects of living, not least the functions of the family. The impact of these changes can drive a way of living by action rather than reflection, where constant virtual connection distracts from parental intuition and a detachment from their natural instincts leading to disconnection from emotional experiences.
As psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, we see the results of these experiences in our fragile patients whose developmental and psychic trajectories have been disrupted. These contemporary ways of being press upon the psychoanalytic theories of the past and challenge us to reconsider how to better conceptualise what we come across in our practice today.
This COCAP Pre-Congress Conference will centre on voices from the Asia-Pacific region. Four papers will be presented from India, Korea, and Taiwan. Each of these papers brings a new lens on the child or adolescent, shaped by the cultural and emotional influences of their environment.
