The Workshop will start on Thursday with the Registration of the participants and a Welcome Reception. On Friday and Saturday, the participants will work in separate small groups.
The small groups will consist of eight (to maximal ten) participants each and stay the same for Friday and Saturday. Every participant will have chosen a literary text that seems fascinating, compelling, puzzling, disturbing or else. The text should be prose (not poetry, play, or essay) and can be an excerpt of a novel or a story, written by the participant or by any published or unpublished author. The author will initially not be revealed to the group (it can be revealed at the end of the discussion of the text).
Each participant has a segment of 90 minutes for the presentation and discussion of his or her literary text. The structure of these segments is as follows: In the first part of a segment (30 minutes), the participant will briefly introduce and read aloud the text to the group (please, make sure that the introduction and reading won’t exceed 30 minutes). In the second part (30 minutes) the group will discuss the text’s impact, understanding, and emotional or associative responses etc. while the presenter only listens, but abstains from commenting. Finally, in the last part (30 minutes) all, including the presenter, will try to understand the creative process in the writer and in the reader’s reception of the text.
The small groups will choose a different moderator for each 90-minutes segment, e.g., round robin. There will be four segments each day: 9:00 – 10:30; coffee break; 11:00 – 12:30; lunch break; 14:00 – 15:30; coffee break; 16:00 – 17:30. (If there are more than eight participants in the groups, we may add an afternoon or Sunday morning group session.)
We are planning a joint session with all participants from all small groups on Sunday to exchange experiences and possible insights / results won in the small group discussions.
If you have further questions, please contact the Chair of the IPA in Culture Committee, Cordelia Schmidt-Hellerau
