Symposium on Psychoanalysis and the Arts *CANCELLED*
Partners in Creation
“In the arts and psychoanalysis, partners in creation experience the perils of rivalry and fusion as well as the pleasures of intimacy and mutual discovery.”

The International Psychoanalytical Association and the American Psychoanalytic Association are pleased once again to sponsor the International Symposium on Psychoanalysis and the Arts. The eighth in a triennial series, this event brings together luminaries from the worlds of psychoanalysis and the arts.

Participants will explore the manifold aspects of our theme, in fact, will embody our theme, partnering in the creation of new insights on the linkages of psychoanalysis with the visual and musical arts. The audience will include experienced clinicians and people in the art world, and among the speakers will be musician, David Rosenmeyer, artist Jane McAdam Freud, art historians David Freedberg and Diane O’Donoghue, psychoanalysts Stefano Bolognini, Anna Bentinck and Michael Parsons, and Mark Solms, psychoanalyst and neuroscientist.

The symposium site will be the Convitto Della Calza, a 16th century architectural masterpiece adorned with magnificent frescos; it has been reborn as a 21st century conference venue, with state-of-the art audio-visual systems. Individual microphones at many seats will allow attendees to join post-lecture discussions with ease. Two coffee breaks each day and the gala reception and dinner will give everyone ample opportunity to share ideas and form new relationships.

Once again, we will offer special tours of Florence, a city that is, itself, a living museum, the grandest realization of the high Renaissance, nestled around a sparkling river, and surrounded by an inspiring vista of wooded hills.

By “partnering” the arts and psychoanalysis, this Symposium will help us to deepen our understanding of creative partnerships in both fields. We hope you will join us.
