Reflecting on One Year in Office

July marked the first year in office for the current IPA Administration. Here, Virginia Ungar shares her thoughts on the Association's achievements over the past year.

At the end of last month, on the 29th July, we celebrated our first year as the new IPA Administration. The day Sergio Nick and I took office, we pledged to carry out this complex task, which involves many challenges, with the utmost care and responsibility. This is why we believe it is timely, on the occasion of this anniversary, to reflect upon the year that has gone by.

One of our main goals is to aid the growth of our association by promoting its development and progress. In order to achieve this, it is important to continue to encourage and provide spaces for respectful interchange and debate. We believe that the work carried out at our board meetings is essential to fulfil this goal. So far, we have had three fruitful meetings, where we have discussed controversial issues, always in a passionate and respectful atmosphere. During these meetings, we have discussed the various situations that take place across different parts of the world. This is important because we need to listen to all voices, and to be aware of, and alert to, any problem that arises with regards to the members and societies that are part of our international association.

We have created a space for scientific meetings prior to each board meeting. Last January, we had a meeting with psychotherapists in Costa Rica and, in June, a fruitful scientific meeting jointly organised by the British Psychoanalytical Society and the British Psychoanalytic Association in London. We are currently planning scientific activities to be held alongside the next board meeting in Lisbon in January 2019.

During the Costa Rica board meeting, three task forces were created. They are working on the controversial issues that came up after the approval of the Eitingon Model Variation: the Collegial Quality Assessment Task Force, the Task Force on New Groups and Equivalence, and the Representation Task Force. These task forces are already working with much effort and dedication.

Currently, our IPA committees are organised within four macro areas: ‘Administrative and Governance’, ‘Scientific’, ‘Development’, and ‘IPA in the Community’. We have set in motion the steering function, whereby each of the three members of the Executive Committee elected by the Board is assigned one of the macro areas of committees. The purpose of the steering function is to facilitate communication within and among the committees, as well as between the committees and the Executive/Board.

We also created the IPA in the Community structure, with committees working on important and highly topical themes: Education, Health, Violence, Culture, and Humanitarian Organisations (including the Migrations and Refugees sub-committee).

We are also working on improving communication between the IPA and the Component Societies, and between the IPA and the membership (our newly-designed e-newsletter is one example of this). We believe it is very important to encourage enriching interchange.

We want to share our enthusiasm about the success of the IPA webinars, our online seminars. Here are just a few of the topics of webinars that we have already held, or have planned for the future: Aprés coup, training, the future of psychoanalysis, couples and family, Sigmund Freud’s archives, cyberspace, managing new tools, sexual and gender diversity, psychoanalysis and law, ethics, women and psychoanalysis, confidentiality and research. On average, our webinars usually attract around 180 attendees.

In terms of international conferences, this May, the extremely successful IPA Asia-Pacific Conference was held in Tokyo. Preparations are already well underway for our 51st IPA Congress next July in London, on the theme of “The Feminine”, where we look forward to meeting many of you.

Last but not least, we want to thank our IPA Board Members for all of their committed and dedicated work, striving to promote a better dialogue that can take into account our common aims but also, more importantly, work on our differences in a respectful way.

Our gratitude goes to the IPA staff who are always available to help.
