Psychoanalytic Assistance in Crises and Emergencies Committee
PACE is a new IPA Committee created in 2021 by the current administration, which is part of the Committees dedicated to the IPA presence in the “Community and the World”. We are a team of analysts (click here for member profiles) from different regions speaking several languages who offer assistance and psychoanalytic interventions to populations around the world facing crises and necessities, establishing links between psychoanalysis and the related professions, government agencies, humanitarian organisations and the general public.

Therefore, we would like to invite you to imagine the emotional world of a child, adolescent, or adult who may have lost
everything under the fire of violence. We can also ask ourselves what is our role as analysts in the face of such an emotional catastrophe, in which there is much to do. At the same time, the task is delicate and complex. It is not just a matter of the rage of wanting to help at all costs.
Our work involves generating a containing environment in vulnerable situations and crises of all kinds, be they natural or man-made catastrophes. ‘Assisting those who assist’ in different contexts and together with health and education professionals. We know that the work on the emotional world and supporting of the bonds in situations of catastrophes prevents traumatic situations. Psychoanalysis offers the tools to be able to intervene. Conceptualising this action, we have compiled literature related to the topics that concern this committee, which have
been produced in the different regions. This body of specific bibliographic reference is offered to the psychoanalytic societies and organisations working in the emergency area. Our mid term and long term objectives are to have some of the texts translated into the local

languages of the affected zones.
From the onset of the dramatic war in Ukraine we have set this task in motion with the committed Ukrainian Psychoanalytic Society (UPS), their analysts and candidates, COCAP, COFAP, IPSO and volunteer analysts from all over the world, offering clinical supervision groups for professionals who treat children, adolescents and adults. We work in Ukraine and countries which host the Ukrainian refugees. Likewise, we offer Work Discussion Groups for professionals who assist soldiers in military hospitals or groups of affected populations in different spaces of the community (psychiatric hospitals, schools, community centres, etc.)
The Work Discussion Group, model created by Martha Harris at the Tavistock Clinic in London in the 1970s and based on psychoanalytic observations, is the Committee's primary intervention to help to contain the emotional experience triggered by working in catastrophic situations in different contexts. Its aim is to extend the benefits of psychoanalytic thinking to people directly affected by world emergencies and to those who assist them, to develop the analytical attitude that has as its main objective and orientation the learning from experience.
In Argentina, we programme brief psychoanalytic interventions with Russian refugees belonging to a persecuted minority group with the Civil Association Human Rights and Diversity and APA, Argentine Psychoanalytic Association, as well as with Syrian refugees through ADRA-UNHCR and their staff. In addition, we will work with refugee Afghan and Haitian families together with the AMAL Argentina Foundation. We count with the help of “contact colleagues” and the Psychoanalytic Societies in each country where we intervene, as well as their centres for assistance to the community. In Spain with the Psychoanalytic Association of Madrid and in Italy together with the Italian Psychoanalytic Society, we are working with teachers and schools receiving underage refugees and offering clinical seminars to colleagues from Eastern Europe with simultaneous translation.
Through BRAZUCRA, the humanitarian organisation which is located on the border between Poland and Ukraine, we work in a Work Discussion group with the staff of a psychiatric hospital in Kiev. Currently, we are organising a new intervention project with them called “The Robin Hood Project” in the context of a general hospital in Ukraine with a group of 6 members of staff, including a parish priest.
Soon after the earthquake in Turkey occurred in early 2023, we immediately contacted the Psychoanalytic Societies in the city of Istanbul, jointly devising the best intervention strategies in the face of such a dramatic catastrophe. In this way, we are working with around 15 candidates from the Istanbul Psychoanalytical Association, who are assisting the affected population.
For all these activities we count with the valuable collaboration of volunteer translators. Although whenever possible many supervision groups and Work Discussion groups work in English, we try to enable the colleagues whom we support to use their native language. This is key for the communication and expression of experiences which are very complex to transmit. We also understand that this is part of the respect for the culture of the region or country we are assisting. The PACE team must adapt to the style of each region, discover it and be surrounded by this cultural imprint. During our course in Mozambique, for example, a colleague from the group was interested in showing us her home and environment, a great aesthetic impact for us, being citizens from different “worlds”.
It is in Mozambique, Africa, that we develop one of our most important projects: a theoretical clinical course - for young psychiatrists and psychologists, organised according to the emergencies which arise in the attention and work experience with children and adolescents. The situation in Mozambique is critical, there are many issues to deal with: the effect of the ongoing tribal wars, terrorism, HIV, teenage pregnancy, child soldiers among others. This course included Work Discussion Groups of the tasks which these professionals carry out in Hospitals and educational Contexts. We are currently organising with the Circle Psychoanalytic of Mozambique CPM, a second course at the beginning of this quarter, following the principles of our interventions, highlighting the practice from which the recommendation of theoretical reading arises. Through this course, we had the pleasure of participating in a radio programme called “ Lives at risk”, therefore getting in contact with the general public. Because of the language and their contact with the region, colleagues from Brazil collaborated with us by giving lessons.
In Brazil we accompanied a wide group of colleagues from the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of Sao Paulo and other regions of the country as advisors and supervisors of an action programme with vulnerable populations, SOS BRAZIL. This programme implies brief emergency interventions with: mothers-babies - young children- Adolescents and Families, which generates a broad assistance impact at community level. In this project we also work with IPA COCAP.
In the USA, we are organising an intervention project in the face of the crisis generated by the armed attacks carried out by young people. Given the general lack of familiarity in North America with the Working Group Model WDG of intervention, the PACE team of the region proposes that we offer training on this to societies, beginning with one pilot project. For this reason we are organising a scientific activity in the region for next year in order to transmit and exchange experiences on psychoanalytic interventions in crises.
PACE finished its action protocol, after almost two years of hard work. We have started our exchange with IPA authorities to agree on a final version. This protocol describes our way of proceeding and intervening in the face of an international crisis within the scope of our committee’s work.

Many babies, children, youth and families are being helped by brave and dedicated analysts, psychotherapists and psychiatrists who are working in the midst of painful catastrophes, the PACE team tries to accompany them in this task.
We would like our work to encourage candidates, members and societies to get involved in this kind of action, thereby developing a humanistic psychoanalysis which is committed to our times.
Comité de Asistencia Psicoanalítica en Crisis y Emergencias Internacionales
PACE, es un nuevo comité de la IPA creado en 2021 por la actual gestión el cual forma parte de los Comités dedicados a la presencia de la IPA en la Comunidad y el Mundo. Somos un equipo de analistas (haga clic aqui para los perfiles del miembros) de distintas regiones, que hablamos diversas lenguas y que ofrecemos asistencia e intervenciones psicoanalíticas a poblaciones alrededor del mundo que enfrentan crisis y necesidades, estableciendo vínculos entre el Psicoanálisis y las profesiones relacionadas, agencias gubernamentales, organizaciones humanitarias internacionales y el público en general.
Por ello, nos gustaría invitarlos a imaginar el mundo emocional de un niño, adolescente o un adulto que puede haberlo perdido todo bajo el fuego de la violencia. También podemos preguntarnos cuál es nuestro rol como analistas ante semejante catástrofe emocional, en la que hay mucho por hacer. Al mismo tiempo, la tarea es delicada y compleja. No se trata sólo del furor de querer ayudar a toda costa.
Nuestro trabajo es generar un ambiente contenedor en situaciones de vulnerabilidad y crisis de todo tipo, ya sea catástrofes naturales o provocadas por el hombre. ‘ Asistir a quienes asisten’ en diversos contextos y junto a diferentes profesionales de la salud y la educación. Sabemos que el trabajo sobre el mundo emocional y el sostenimiento de los vínculos en circunstancias de catástrofe, previene consecuencias traumáticas. El psicoanálisis brinda las herramientas necesarias para poder intervenir. Conceptualizando esta acción hemos publicado en nuestro website literatura relacionada con los temas que conciernen al comité, producida en las diferentes regiones. Este cuerpo de referencia bibliográfica específica es ofrecido a las Sociedades Psicoanalíticas y organizaciones que se encuentran trabajando en la zona de emergencia cuando estas surgen. Es nuestro objetivo a mediano y largo plazo lograr la traducción en el idioma de la región afectada, de alguno de esos textos.
Desde el inicio de la dramática guerra en Ucrania hemos trabajado junto a la comprometida Sociedad Psicoanalítica de Ucrania, sus analistas y candidatos, COCAP, COFAP, IPSO y analistas voluntarios de todas partes del mundo, brindando grupos de supervisión clínica a profesionales que atienden a niños, adolescentes y adultos, ya sea en Ucrania o en los países que alojan a la población ucraniana refugiada. De igual forma, ofrecemos Grupos de Discusión de trabajo a profesionales que asisten a soldados en Hospitales Militares y Hospitales Psiquiátricos.
El Work Discusión Group, modelo de trabajo en grupo creado por Martha Harris en la Clínica Tavistock hacia los años 70, y el cual se basa en la observación psicoanalítica, es la principal intervención del Comité para ayudar a contener la experiencia emocional desencadenada por el trabajo en situaciones catastróficas en diferentes contextos. Su objetivo es llevar los beneficios del pensamiento psicoanalítico a las personas directamente afectadas por las emergencias mundiales y a quienes las asisten, y de esta manera desarrollar la actitud analítica que toma como principal objetivo y orientación el aprendizaje a partir de la experiencia.
En Argentina, junto a organizaciones humanitarias como la Asociación Civil Derechos Humanos y diversidad y la Asociación Psicoanalítica Argentina, programamos intervenciones psicoanalíticas breves con población rusa refugiada por pertenecer a una minoría perseguida. Así también con población Siria refugiada a través de ADRA-ACNUR y su staff. Con la Fundación AMAL Argentina trabajaremos con familias afganas y haitianas refugiadas en este país.
Contamos para esto con la ayuda de colegas “contactos” de las Sociedades Psicoanalíticas en cada país en donde estamos interviniendo, así como con sus centros de asistencia a la comunidad. Tanto en España junto a la Asociación Psicoanalítica de Madrid, como en Italia a través de la Asociación Psicoanalítica Italiana, estamos trabajando con maestras y escuelas que reciben menores refugiados y brindando Seminarios clínicos a colegas del Este de Europa, contando con traducción simultánea en varios idiomas.
A través de la organización humanitaria BRAZUCRA que se encuentra en la frontera entre Polonia y Ucrania, trabajamos en un grupo de discusión clínica con el personal de un Hospital Psiquiátrico en Kiev. En la actualidad estamos organizando junto a ellos un nuevo proyecto de intervención llamado “Robin Hood Project”, en el contexto de un Hospital General en Ucrania y con un grupo de 6 miembros del Staff incluido un párroco.
Apenas ocurrido el terremoto en Turquía a comienzos de 2023, contactamos inmediatamente a las Sociedades Psicoanalíticas de la ciudad de Estambul, pensando en conjunto las mejores estrategias de intervención ante la dramática catástrofe. De esta manera estamos trabajando con aproximadamente 15 candidatos de la Sociedad Psicoanalítica de Estambul, quienes están asistiendo a la población afectada.
Para todas estas actividades contamos con la valiosa colaboración de traductores voluntarios. Si bien cuando es posible muchos grupos de supervisión y Work Discussion Groups funcionan en Inglés, intentamos que los colegas a quienes le brindamos apoyo puedan utilizar su lengua materna, esto resulta clave en la comunicación y puesta en palabras de vivencias muy complejas de expresar. Comprendemos también que esto forma parte del respeto por la cultura de la región o el país al que estamos asistiendo. Nosotros, el equipo de PACE es el que debe adaptarse al estilo de cada región, descubrirlo y dejarse envolver por esa impronta cultural. Nos ha pasado que en nuestro curso en Mozambique ha surgido espontáneamente de parte de algún colega del grupo su interés en mostrar su casa y su entorno, fue un gran impacto estético para nosotros ciudadanos de diferentes “mundos”.
Es en Mozambique, África, donde desarrollamos uno de nuestros proyectos más importantes: un curso teórico - clínico dirigido a jóvenes psiquiatras y psicólogos organizado según las urgencias que surgen en la atención y experiencia de su trabajo con niños y adolescentes en urgencias sociales. La situación en Mozambique es critica, graves crisis los aquejan como efecto de las guerras tribales, niños soldados, el terrorismo, el HIV, el embarazo adoelscente, entre otras. Este curso incluyó Work Discussion Groups de la tarea que realizan estos profesionales en Hospitales y Contextos educativos. Estamos en estos días organizando junto al Círculo Psicoanalítico de Mozambique, un segundo curso en el inicio de este cuatrimestre del año siguiendo los principios de acentuar la práctica a partir de la cual surja la recomendación de lectura teórica. A través de este curso tuvimos el placer de participar en un programa de radio llamado “Vidas en riesgo”, entrando en contacto de esta manera con el público en general. Colegas de Brasil, por el idioma y su contacto con la región, colaboraron junto a nosotros en el dictado de las clases.
En Brasil acompañamos a un importante grupo de colegas de la Sociedad Brasilera de Psicoanálisis de Sao Paulo y de otras regiones de ese País, como asesores y supervisores de un programa de acción con población vulnerable, SOS BRASIL. Este programa implica intervenciones psicoanalíticas breves: madres-bebés - niños pequeños- Adolescentes y Familias, el cual genera un amplio impacto de asistencia a nivel de la comunidad. En este proyecto también trabajamos junto a IPA COCAP.

Muchos bebés, niños, jóvenes y familias están siendo ayudados por valientes y dedicados analistas, psicoterapeutas y psiquiatras en medio de estas dolorosas catástrofes, el equipo de PACE intenta acompañarlos en esta tarea contando con las herramientas que el psicoanálisis brinda.
Nos gustaría que nuestro trabajo continúe alentando a candidatos, miembros y Sociedades a que se involucren en este tipo de acción, en pos de un psicoanálisis humanista y comprometido con nuestro tiempo.
