DECEMBER 2023
IPA PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE

Publications Committee Overview - Video presentation created for the IPA 53rd Congress Cartagena 2023

The Publications Committee is excited to showcase its accomplishments, featuring work from both past and ongoing projects. In fulfilling its responsibilities, the Committee has formulated a comprehensive strategy for IPA publications, aligning them with the interests of the membership, bolstering the IPA's global reputation, and ensuring coordinated publications with Routledge.

Over the past two years, the current Committee has actively promoted the dissemination of IPA books through successful online book events. Notable among these events were discussions on "On Freud’s Moses and Monotheism" and " José Bleger's "Psychoanalysis of the Psychoanalytic Frame Revisited" conducted in both English and Spanish, with substantial participation.

While our published books are predominantly in English, we have successfully organised book launches in Spanish, featuring works such as José Bleger's "Psychoanalysis of the Psychoanalytic Frame Revisited" and Pere Folch's "The Poetry of the Word in Psychoanalysis." These events, drawing 250 to 400 participants, underscore the Committee's commitment to diverse language outreach.

IPA books around the world

The Publications Committee welcomes book proposals year-round from IPA members, collaborating closely with Routledge to ensure the production of high-quality printed materials. Furthermore, the Committee has successfully negotiated foreign rights for titles in the Contemporary Freud series, reaching readers in Simplified Chinese. This expansion includes collaborations with Franco Angeli (Italy), Wu-Nan Book (Taiwan), Yapi Kredi Publications (Turkey), Fundația Generatia Publishing House (Romania), Humensis (France), Raffaello Cortina (Italy), Klett Kotta Vertag (Germany), PSYCHOSOZIAL VERLAG (Germany), EDITORA PERSPECTIVA S/A (Portugal), Frommann-Holzboog (Germany), Bayard Éditions, Yale, Technipublicaciones, S.A.

Looking ahead, the Committee is gearing up to launch a joint quarterly publications journal with Routledge in 2024. This year, a diverse range of books has been published through Routledge, reflecting our commitment to fostering scientific development and increasing awareness of the profession.

The Committee plans to host at least four book events next year, featuring regional discussants. Additionally, efforts are underway to promote new books and collections through book launches and local-level events.

Publish your books with the IPA

Emphasising the importance of members publishing through the IPA Publications Committee, we underscore three key aspects:

a) Continuity and Dialogue: Accepted books become integral parts of established IPA-Routledge collections, fostering a meaningful dialogue with previously published works. The committee places a priority on original themes in continuity with psychoanalytic subjects, avoiding redundancy.

b) Peer-Reviewed Quality: Publishing through the Committee guarantees anonymous peer review, maintaining high-quality standards. Accepted books receive recognition through book launches and/or IPA-organized podcasts.

c) Global reach -  You will receive a personal editorial experience - guidance and knowledge based on decades of expertise. A specialised Author Marketing team is available to support you as you promote your book to your own networks.  Routledge's international marketing teams are highly specialised, targeting the primary audience for your book and drawing on decades of experience and research.

New IPA book series

Excitingly, the Committee announces the title for its sixth series: "Current Challenges in Psychoanalysis." To enhance visibility, collaboration with EPF organizers for the March 2024 event in Florence is on the agenda.

Working closely with Routledge's marketing department, the Committee has successfully promoted books aligning with IPA Congress themes. Two free E-Books for IPA members, featuring forewords by the Publications Chair and IPA President, have been compiled. Plans are underway for another e-book for the IPA’s 54th Congress in 2025.

Member discounts

In collaboration with Routledge, the Committee continues to support member benefits, offering a 30% discount on IPA and Routledge books. The IPA Talks On Psychoanalysis podcast series and online book events will further amplify the Committee's outreach efforts.

Overall, the Publications Committee remains steadfast in its dedication to advancing psychoanalytic scholarship, promoting quality publications, and fostering global collaboration within the IPA community.
