In September 2023 the Communications Committee launched a new project: The Thinking Labs (TL).
Thinking Labs are open to IPA members and candidates. They will last for 3 months and in the first round there were 2 groups in English, one in Spanish, one in French, one in German and one in Italian.

Abstract:
Son múltiples las referencias -sobretodo después de la pandemia del COVID 19- a la operatividad y los efectos terapéuticos de la práctica psicoanalítica en un contexto no presencial, facilitado por los dispositivos electrónicos que garantizan la comunicación en tiempo real. Pero son escasas -en las instituciones agrupadas en la IPA- las reflexiones en torno a los criterios de definen un final de análisis. A partir de la discusión sobre aquello que implica un análisis llevado a buen puerto pensaremos sobre la viabilidad del análisis del analista, sosteniendo como telón de fondo los pro y los contra (o en todo caso, las diferencias) entre las modalidades presenciales y no presenciales de la clínica psicoanalítica.

“Looking for the Un ‘real’ Couch: Transference-Countertransference Development in The Virtual Analytical Room”
Abstract
The years of the pandemic have taught human beings to accept, adapt, evolve, mourn, and tolerate powerlessness in many different affairs of life. Every human being was experiencing similar kinds of difficulties, universally. Mental health professionals were experiencing a very different quality of crisis compared to other professionals. Psychoanalysts, mostly, felt conflicted by the lure of the existence of several virtual conferencing mediums and the absence of the analytical space and couch in such ‘unreality’. When viewed apparently, virtual media seems to be not very different from conducting sessions in a personal office. Both the analysand and the analyst maintain the rules of time, payment, boundaries and communications successfully. But it’s not just rules and communications which are the essence of psychoanalysis. The nuanced expressions of different emotions, observable through bodily gestures and demeanours can get lost in such virtual spaces. What happens to the proprioceptive and interoceptive experiences of the analysand? Are they observable through the video? It is stated that the absence of linking in a head and shoulders presentation (as it happens online) could potentially be problematic for analytic couples unless a means to bridge it is discovered. It might even leave the patient feeling alone with his/her experiences. This creates a question of how to fathom the transference-countertransference phenomenon when it comes to the virtual setup. Is it very different from the ‘real-life’ arrangements? If not, then what makes them similar? If so, then how are they different? What are the implications of the differences in the therapeutic dyad? How does it impact the working alliance? What happens to privacy and its impact on transference on the part of the client who remains ever cautious of the presence of a third? Or does the virtual medium become the analytical third itself? Therefore, the thinking lab would aim to conceptualize the transference-countertransference phenomenon experienced in the virtual analytical room and the relationship between the psychoanalytic process to the virtual world.
Dr Jhelum Podder is a practising Psychoanalyst associated with the Indian Psychoanalytical Society and an Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology, Loreto College, Kolkata, India. After doing her master’s in psychology, Dr Podder did her PhD from the University of Calcutta, India in 2019. She presently holds the position of Assistant Secretary of the Indian Psychoanalytical Society (IPS) and Assistant Editor of the journal of IPS. Dr. Podder’s research interests lie in qualitative methods, transference, counter-transference, and online psychoanalysis among many others. She is currently associated as a Research Assistant in the field of climate and psychoanalysis, funded by IPA.

Tra interpretazione e relazione: esplorare i fattori trasformativi in psicoanalisi.
Abstract
La psicoanalisi oggi si muove sempre più su un doppio binario: quello che tende a decodificare i significati inconsci e va quindi verso la ricostruzione archeologica del passato, e un altro binario che guarda ai processi di costruzione di esperienze nuove che permettano lo sviluppo di stati potenziali del Sé attraverso la relazione tra paziente e analista.
In che modo l'interpretazione e la relazione paziente-analista possono prendersi cura delle nuove forme di sofferenza mentale e di funzionamento psichico? Che tipo di integrazione esiste tra questi due fattori terapeutici?
Scopo di questo gruppo è riflettere sull'attualità dell'azione terapeutica della psicoanalisi, a partire dalla discussione di materiale clinico.
Marco De Coppi, psicologo e psicoterapeuta, membro associato della Società Psicoanalitica Italiana (SPI) e dell'International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). Lavora privatamente con adolescenti, adulti e coppie ed è docente presso la scuola di specializzazione in psicoterapia psicoanalitica ASNEA di Monza. E' autore, insieme ad altri colleghi, del libro “La voce di Else. Dal monologo al dialogo tra psicoanalisi, teatro e letteratura” (2022, Mimesis Edizioni) e ha presentato lavori scientifici ai congressi IPA (Boston 2015), IPSO (London 2019) e SPI (Napoli 2022).

Empathie versus Transfert ? Une double écoute serait-elle possible ?
Abstract
L’empathie qui est une attitude banale dans notre travail d’analystes, faisant partie de la neutralité bienveillante, peut aussi, comme on le sait, devenir un outil technique plus spécifique de notre écoute, selon des paramètres bien particuliers de la cure analytique : psychopathologiques, étiologiques, processuels, thérapeutiques, mais aussi selon des choix théoriques et de formation opérés par l’analyste en charge de la cure. L’attention portée à l’empathie peut souvent apparaître comme s’inscrivant au détriment du repérage transférentiel de la pulsionnalité et de son nécessaire maniement dans la cure. L’empathie peut apparaître donc comme visant un autre modèle de compréhension du processus psychanalytique à l’encontre de l’approche plus classique de la démarche freudienne.
Tout semble opposer empathie et transfert : écoute subjectivante (voire intersubjectivante) versus écoute objectivante ; préoccupations pour l’objet et pour le narcissisme s’opposant aux revendications de la libido ; écoute du traumatique contre l’écoute du désir ; sensibilité pour des aspects archaïques de la psyché qui masquent des aspects davantage structurés autour du complexe d’Œdipe ; émotions versus représentations ; etc. Dans notre laboratoire, nous essaierons de reprendre les principales positions qui s’affrontent dans ce débat en nous souciant d’en illustrer ses termes par des exemples cliniques. Nous nous proposerons certes d’expliciter les portées et les limites de ces deux approches d’écoute et d’intervention ; mais, nous nous évertuerons surtout à réfléchir à leur articulation, dans la complexité d’un même matériel clinique, afin de mettre à l’épreuve de nos pratiques l’écoute empathique et interprétative des deux niveaux transférentiels (précoce et oedipien). La conceptualisation de Daniel Widlöcher (ex-président IPA) derrière sa notion de « co- pensée » nous servira de base théorique.

Die Bedeutsamkeit der Frequenz in Psychoanalysen
Abstract
In diesem neuen Veranstaltungsformat möchten wir in einer kleinen Runde und einer Folge von drei Online-Sitzungen der Frage nachgehen, was für eine Rolle die Behandlungsfrequenz in unserer praktischen Arbeit und in unseren theoretischen Überlegungen spielt. Es ist zum Thema der Frequenz in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten einiges geschrieben worden, über das man diskutieren könnte. Auch ist klar, dass bei psychoanalytischen Frequenzentscheidungen Tatsachen aus dem Alltagsleben beider Beteiligter eine Rolle spielen, wie auch kulturelle Faktoren oder Gepflogenheiten psychoanalytischer Schulen. Letztendlich sind aber alle Analytiker*innen im Verlauf ihres Arbeitslebens auch zu je eigenen Erfahrungen und einem individuellen Umgang mit der Frequenzfrage gekommen. Wir möchten hier diesen individuellen Erfahrungen Raum geben, uns austauschen, und vielleicht auch durch die Beteiligung von Kolleg*innen aus unterschiedlichen Ländern oder Ausbildungskontexten (soweit dies in einer Veranstaltung in deutscher Sprache gegeben ist) unseren Horizont erweitern. Vielleicht ist es am Ende möglich, Ergebnisse der Diskussion auch anderen Interessent*innen zugänglich zu machen.

Money Matters in the Consulting Room
Abstract
In this thinking lab we will focus on money as one of the key components of the analytic frame in adult and adolescent psychoanalysis. Secondly, we will discuss in depth children’s and parent’s attitudes towards and fantasies about the analytic fee. The relationships between gender, race, class and money will also be explored.
Jennifer Davids is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and the IPA. She is an adult, child and adolescent psychoanalyst, and a supervising analyst for child and adolescent psychoanalysis, living, writing and working in London. Published widely, Jennifer has taught at both psychoanalytic institutes and universities in many countries. She was the originator of and a participant in the IPA webinar on Money Talks in November 2022, available on IPA website.
