The Vienna Psychoanalytic Association (Wiener Arbeitskreis für Psychoanalyse / WAP originally “Wiener Arbeitskreis für Tiefenpsychologie”) was founded in 1947 by Igor Caruso as one of the attempts to reestablish psychoanalysis in Austria after its destruction by the National Socialist Regime. In the course of its history the Arbeitskreis with its numerous international connections developed into a psychoanalytic institute which finally became a component member of the IPA in 2013.
Characterized by a dynamic identity and an openness towards many psychoanalytic schools and methods it made lasting contributions in shaping, influencing and supporting psychoanalysis in Vienna as well as throughout Austria.
The Vienna Psychoanalytic Association offers an accredited training program for psychoanalysis and organizes regular scholarly lectures for members and candidates in addition to a separate lecture series open also to the general public. An important outreach-effort was the foundation of an Add-on curriculum for ‘Psychoanalysis’ at the University of Vienna. The Vienna Psychoanalytic Association is also co-publisher of the unique Austrian psychoanalytic quarterly “texte. psychoanalyse. ästhetik. kulturkritik”.
As results of an increasing cooperation with the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (Wiener Psychoanalytische Vereinigung / WPV) the two associations are sharing facilities at Salzgries 16 since 2007, having established at the same time the Vienna Psychoanalytic Academy (Wiener Psychoanalytische Akademie / WPAk) as a common project for the promotion of psychoanalysis in many fields and disciplines besides its clinical implications.
