IPA Vice-President Sergio Nick's inaugural speech at the Buenos Aires Congress, July 2017

The following is a translation from the original speech given in Portuguese, which can be found directly below the English.

 Dear members of the Board, dear ladies and gentlemen,

This is a very special moment for me, a long awaited one since I had the privilege of being invited by Virginia Ungar, to administer the position of Vice President during her candidacy as President, at the end of Buenos Aires Congress.

I recognise the importance of the administrative role entrusted to us by IPA members over the next few years. To all those who have given us their vote, their confidence and support, I want to extend my sincere gratitude; also to Virginia, and to those who have helped us over the last few years to prepare for our administration.

I’m not going to list them here because there were many who helped us, but without you all, it would not have been possible to put together our projects and plans for this new administration.

I also want to say how fortunate I feel to be given this opportunity to work alongside Virginia Ungar. She is a great leader, capable, attentive and concerned for those around her, as well as always being open to sharing in an inclusive manner her point of view and proposals. Together, we will build a place for creative and constructive work. I believe that without her vast work ethic and capacity for thinking issues through, we would be far from achieving the projects that we have outlined for our administration.       

If I may, I would like to echo Virginia’s gratitude to Stefano Bolognini and his team. With Stefano, we had a great working environment, full of respect and consideration. It’s because of the kindness and inclusive reception that Stefano gave us that we are well prepared to start our administration. 


To the IPA Board, we thank you for your hospitability and the opportunity to get to know your work dynamics, perspectives and work nuances in overseeing such a vast and complex association as the IPA. To Andrew Brooke, for his incredible generosity and competency, thank you very much and thanks equally to Alexandra Billinghurst, for her constant presence and her great dedication to her work at the IPA.


Aside from these acknowledgements, which could take up all of my speech, I would also like to mention some projects not yet discussed by Virginia. In fact, she has specifically asked me to do so.

It is clear to us that, given the economic difficulties that many people face, we need to lower the costs of the IPA Congresses. From the outset, we are thinking about preparations for the next congress, looking for economic options permitting more members to come to our congresses. London will allow us to economize on two fronts: the first, the IPA staff will not need to incur travel costs to another city; the second, the fact that we have found a conference center at a very affordable cost. It is clear that our roots in British psychoanalysis also influenced our choice, as well as the fact that we have not had a congress in the city for a long time. I would like to invite all of you - as you will see in the video that we will watch soon - to come to London to discuss 'The Feminine' in 2019. We believe we will have a great congress!

We have already scheduled a new Asia-Pacific Congress to be held in Tokyo, Japan, in May 2018. We are very pleased that this region is imbued with the desire and strength to develop in both, the scientific arena and in the ​​integration of its members! We will follow the steps taken by Stefano Bolognini for the development of this region, upon which the Asia-Pacific Planning Committee is already working.

Another point is we intend to promote the IPA Scientific area further, maintaining successful projects created by the previous administration, and proposing some new projects. Our first action will be to suggest to the IPA Board that its members participate in scientific activities in years when these do not coincide with IPA conferences. This has already been done successfully by previous administrations. We think in this manner we will give more opportunity to our Board members, to share their ideas and clinical-theoretical capabilities. Thus, we will consider holding scientific conferences in the cities where the Board will meet at a low cost.

A second proposal will be to hold interregional scientific events in the years that we don’t have IPA congresses. It would be a way to stimulate the exchange of scientific ideas and clinical practices among members of the various regions and countries that the IPA covers. The use of funds from the CAPSA programme will be a means of making these events economically viable, counting on the help and support of local societies.

Still within the scientific area, and thinking about scientific exchanges among IPA members, we want to provide technical support for further development and use of online resources. With this, more members will have access to conferences, group supervision, seminars, and other scientific activities. We know many groups feel isolated and could benefit greatly from these online tools. We also think that it is a way to reach people outside the IPA, perhaps attracting them to be part of our association.

Supporting this objective, the "IPA Blog", a tool created by Romolo Petrini and the Web Editorial Board, will be developed in order to have a greater reach. According to the Committee, the goal is "to establish and maintain an internet commentary on social, cultural and political issues from a psychoanalytic perspective, raising awareness about the contemporary relevance of psychoanalysis within the extended psychoanalytic community of practitioners and interested lay persons”. 

Furthermore, there is another area in which we would like to continue developing: Communications. Following the excellent work carried out by the Outreach group, Stefano and his team worked on several projects that we feel are necessary to maintain, such as the Web Editorial Board, the Communications Advisory Board, the Social Media Committee, and the Wikipedia Committee. After talking to the Chairs of all the Communication Committees, Alexandra Billinghurst, IPA staff, and communication experts, we have created a plan that maintains what has been carried out successfully, as well as introducing new duties.

Our initial focus will be the coordination of those actions already carried out and a closer look at our internal communications with our IPA members. Questions are being asked such as "what does the IPA do for us? ", and" how does the IPA spend the funds paid by members?” The IPA is a membership association and you cannot leave these questions unanswered. We believe that any members’ association needs to be accessible to its members even though we know the distance that separates us. We found an important quote in the report presented by the IPA Member Communication Service Committee:

“The IPA has invested heavily in efforts such as the DPPT Project and the IMI project (IPA Media Initiative). Results of these projects and grants have not been accessible to the majority of members. Most members have never heard of these initiatives, let alone know about the projects they funded”. 

Knowing that Outreach has already developed extensively, we will pay special attention to the challenge of improving communication with our members. We believe that such a challenge demands a series of actions and, in order to help us implement it, we are looking for a Communications Manager who will take care of this immense role. Prudence Gourguechon and her team left us a legacy, which is an extensive and detailed list of duties for this Communications Manager. We will be developing this plan with the help of the current Communications Committee Chairs, so to that extent we have retained the current committee members for a bit longer so that we don’t lose their experience and the know-how which they have acquired so far.

Another point that we are planning on focusing on is Publications. We have some projects and ideas to discuss with the Board, including plans to publish the results of the interregional conferences we are proposing. 

Finally, if we manage to receive the support from the Board and the means necessary to develop these projects, I believe we will have a good start to our administration. As Virginia already mentioned, we would like to develop a closer relationship with the Board, in the development of ideas and projects, and in the administration of this great association that the IPA has become!

If we achieve this and grow closer to our members, we may be living up to the motto that guides our administration “An IPA for all!”

Este é um momento muito especial para mim, aguardado que foi desde que tive o privilégio de receber o convite de Virginia Ungar para ocupar o lugar de vice-presidente em sua candidatura para administrar a IPA a partir deste congresso.

Eu sei da importância e o lugar que nos foi dado pelos membros da IPA para dirigi-la pelos próximos anos. A todos que nos brindaram com o seu voto, com a sua confiança, e com o apoio, quero trazer a público o meu mais sincero agradecimento. O mesmo digo, junto com Virginia, aos que nos ajudaram durante estes anos de preparação para iniciarmos essa gestão. Não os listo aqui porque foram muitos os que nos ajudaram, mas sem vocês, não seria possível armarmos os projetos e planos para esse início de gestão.

Além disso, quero dizer o quão afortunado me sinto pela oportunidade de trabalhar ao lado de Virginia Ungar.  Ela é uma grande líder; capaz, atenciosa e preocupada com os que estão ao seu redor, além de sempre aberta a dividir de forma inclusiva seus pensamentos e projetos. Com isso construímos uma atmosfera de trabalho criativa e construtiva. E creio que sem sua enorme capacidade de trabalho e de pensar, estaríamos muito longe de apresentar os projetos que delineamos para nossa gestão!

Se me permitem, gostaria de repetir o agradecimento que Virginia fez a Stefano Bolognini e sua equipe. Com Stefano, vivemos uma atmosfera de trabalho com muito respeito e consideração. É pela gentil e inclusiva recepção que nos deu Stefano que podemos iniciar essa gestão mais seguros do que temos pela frente. Ao Board da IPA, agradecemos pela sua acolhida, e pela oportunidade de conhecer como trabalham, como pensam, e tantas nuances do trabalho de administrar e gerir associação tão vasta e complexa como a IPA. A Andrew Brooke, pela sua incrível generosidade e capacidade de trabalho, o nosso Muito Obrigado! A Alexandra Billinghurst, pela sua presença constante e pela sua enorme dedicação ao trabalho na IPA.

Mas afora os agradecimentos, que poderiam tomar toda a minha fala, gostaria de acrescentar alguns projetos aos já citados por Virginia. Na verdade, ela mesma me pediu que o fizesse.

Está claro para nós que, diante das dificuldades econômicas que muitos vivem, precisamos baixar os custos dos Congressos da IPA. Estamos desde o início, quando pensamos nos preparativos para o próximo congresso, buscando soluções mais econômicas para permitir que mais membros venham aos nossos congressos. Nesse sentido, Londres nos permitirá economizar em duas frentes: a primeira, o não deslocamento de todo o staff para outra cidade; a segunda, o fato de termos conseguido um centro de convenções a custo bem mais acessível. É claro que nossas raízes na Psicanálise britânica também influenciaram em nossa escolha, além do fato de há muito não se ter um congresso naquela cidade. Conclamo pois, desde já, a todos - como verão no vídeo que logo passaremos - que venham a Londres discutir ‘O Feminino” em 2019. Acreditamos que teremos um grande congresso!

Temos ainda já programado um novo Congresso da região Ásia-Pacífico, que será realizado em Tóquio, Japão, em maio de 2018. Estamos muito contentes que essa região se mostre tão imbuída do desejo e da força de se desenvolver tanto na área científica, quanto na área da integração de seus membros! Seguiremos os passos dados por Stefano Bolognini para o desenvolvimento dessa região, para o qual, inclusive, já trabalha o Asia-Pacific Planning Committee.

Em outra frente de trabalho, é nossa intenção promover ainda mais a área Científica da IPA, mantendo projetos de sucesso criados pelas administrações anteriores, e propondo alguns novos projetos. Nossa primeira iniciativa será propor ao Board da IPA que seus membros possam participar de atividades científicas por ocasião das reuniões do Board, quando elas não coincidirem com os congressos da IPA. Isso já foi feito, com sucesso, por administrações anteriores. Pensamos que seria uma forma de dar mais lugar aos membros do Board, todos conhecidos por suas ideias e capacidades clinico-teóricas. Assim, proporemos simpósios científicos nas cidades aonde o Board irá se reunir, com custo reduzido.

Uma segunda proposta será a realização de eventos científicos inter-regionais nos anos em que não houver congresso da IPA. Será uma forma de incrementar o intercâmbio de ideias cientificas e de práticas clínicas entre os membros das várias regiões e países que compõem a IPA. O uso de fundos do programa CAPSA será uma forma de viabilizar economicamente tais eventos, sempre contando com a ajuda e organização das sociedades locais.

Ainda dentro da área cientifica, e pensando sempre em trocas cientificas entre os membros da IPA, queremos prover bases técnicas para o maior desenvolvimento e aproveitamento de recursos online. Com eles, mais membros poderão ter acesso aos simpósios, a supervisões em grupo, a seminários, dentre outras atividades cientificas. Sabemos de muitos grupos que se sentem mais isolados e que poderiam se beneficiar muito dessas ferramentas online. Pensamos ser também uma forma de atingir pessoas de fora da IPA, quem sabe os atraindo a fazer parte de nossa associação.

Dentro desse objetivo, o “IPA Blog”, ferramenta criada por Romolo Petrini e o Web Editorial Board, também será fomentada com vistas a atingir volumes maiores. Segundo eles, o objetivo é “to establish and maintain an internet commentary on social, cultural and political issues from a psychoanalytic perspective, raising awareness about the contemporary relevance of psychoanalysis within the extended psychoanalytic community of practitioners and interested lay persons.”

Mas existe uma outra área na qual gostaríamos de seguir trabalhando firme: Comunicações. Depois do excelente trabalho feito pelo grupo que cuidou do assim chamado “Outreach”, Stefano e seu time trabalharam em vários projetos que pensamos ser necessário manter, como o Web Editorial Board, o Communications Advisory Board, o Social Media Committee, e o Wikipedia Committee. Depois de conversar com os presidentes de todos os comitês de Comunicação, com Alexandra Billinghurst, com o staff da IPA, e com alguns experts em comunicação, nós construímos um plano de trabalho que mantém o que tem sido feito com sucesso, ao mesmo tempo em que vamos implementando novas tarefas.

Nosso foco inicial será a coordenação dessas ações já realizadas e um olhar mais apurado para a comunicação interna com os membros da IPA. Seguem sendo formuladas perguntas como “O que a IPA faz por nós? ”, ou “Como a IPA gasta os fundos pagos pelos membros? ”. A IPA é uma Associação de Membros e não pode deixar essas perguntas sem resposta. Acreditamos que qualquer associação de membros precisa estar próxima deles e sabemos a distância que ainda nos separa. Encontramos uma citação importante no relatório apresentado pelo ‘IPA Member Communication Services Committee’:

Assim, sabendo que a área de ‘Outreach’ já se desenvolveu bastante, nós daremos uma atenção especial ao desafio de melhorar a comunicação com os nossos membros. Acreditamos que tal desafio demanda uma série de ações e, para ajudar-nos a implementá-la, buscamos um gerente de comunicações que desafogue o imenso rol de tarefas que o staff da IPA tem para cuidar. Prudence Gourguechon e sua equipe deixou-nos um legado, que é um extenso e detalhado rol de tarefas para esse gerente de Comunicações. Pensamos em desenvolver esse plano com a ajuda dos atuais presidentes dos comitês de Comunicação, e por isso os mantivemos por mais um tempo, para que não se perca a experiencia e o ‘know-how’ por eles adquirido.

Outro ponto que pensamos em enfocar é o de Publicações. Temos alguns projetos e ideias a discutir com o Board, incluindo-se aqui planos para se publicar resultados dos simpósios inter-regionais que vamos propor.

Enfim, caso logremos receber do Board o apoio e as adições necessárias ao bom desenvolvimento desses projetos, creio que teremos um bom início para a nossa gestão. Como já o disse Virginia, queremos ter o Board mais próximos a nós, seja no desenvolvimento de ideias e projetos, seja na administração dessa grande associação que a IPA se tornou!

Se lograrmos isso e estando mais perto de nossos membros, poderemos estar fazendo jus ao lema que norteou nossa candidatura: “Uma IPA para todos! ”
