LAISPS is dedicated to psychoanalytic independence, which we define as an open-minded, discerning attitude toward the rich diversity of psychoanalytic theory and practice. We highly value contemporary orientations, and believe that in order to understand them in depth, a strong foundation in Freud's seminal work is necessary. We are committed to the task of helping candidates forge their own unique psychoanalytic identities. Beyond the consulting room, we deeply believe in the importance of applying psychoanalysis to the problems of the community.
Established in 1970, the first interdisciplinary psychoanalytic institute was in Los Angeles, founded by nationally recognized psychologists and clinical social worker psychoanalysts. Created when non-medical mental health professionals were restricted from psychoanalytic training and practice.Maintained the highest educational standards consistent with those of the International Psychoanalytical Association. Became a full component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association in 1995.
